I am trying to gain a little knowledge from the code official members , regarding enforcement of Section R 613.2 W/EXCEPTIONS. Exception # 1 allows windows whose openings do not allow passage of a 4 inch sphere when in the full open position. Iam assuming this involves the internal workings of a window , something installed by the manufacturer. Ihave been approached by several contracters who have proposed installing long pop in substitute plastic window stops that are provided with most new windows, installing angle brackets screwed in place, wooden blocks ect. the aforementioned fixes are all easily removed by the home owner.
Exception # 2 allows openings to be covered by window guards compling with ASTM 2006 AND F2090. I am unsure but think these standards deal with window guards /grills , not after market window stops.
I have contacted ICC about this issue and was given the official response that only guards / stops that cmply with the above mentioned standards should be approved or alternative materials which must be accepted and then approved by ICC.
I would like to get some input from the membership/ code adminstrators about what they may have approved. I would also appreciate any info on products the might be approved through a evaluation service for this application.
